SPRINKLERS
- Frequently Asked Questions
The following are a list of
frequently asked questions Radius Services receives
pertaining fire sprinkler systems. If
your question is not covered here, please contact us either through
email or by telephone.
Most of the time, your local building
codes will be quite specific about whether your facility needs
sprinklers. Building codes throughout the Tri-State area are
increasingly being updated so that almost every type of building,
old and new, requires fire sprinklers. Speaking generally, most new
construction requires some type of fire protection.
Sprinkler FAQ
First, fire sprinklers markedly enhance
personal safety. They also can protect property from destruction or
severe damage in the event of a fire. In addition, many insurance
companies will reduce premiums for policyholders who install
sprinkler systems.
One thing to keep in mind is that it may
be legal to build without sprinklers. But if building codes change,
or a remodeling job is later considered, you may be required to
install a sprinkler system. The best approach is that if you think
you may need sprinklers, it's easiest and cheapest to handle it
during construction. Retrofitting an existing building is much more
costly.
Maintenance and certification
requirements for sprinklers vary by city and state. Many
municipalities, however, require sprinkler systems to pass
certification every five years.
Fire Hydrants must pass an annual
inspection. These inspections must be carried out by a licensed
contractor.
During testing, the hydrant is inspected
to ensure that it is functioning properly. Additionally,
measurements are made to determine the rate of water flow from the
hydrant. Finally, the hydrant is put through an eight-step checklist
to ensure that it is mechanically sound.
If you're in the Tri-State area, we want
to help you. We are licensed specialists in all the areas of
sprinkler installation, certification, and maintenance. Please bear
in mind the following: sprinkler water can sit in the pipe for years
and become contaminated and undrinkable. As a result, many cities
are beginning to require backflow devices be installed and inspected
with sprinkler systems. Backflow devices prevent sprinkler water
from backing up into the city water supply and contaminating local
drinking water.
Oftentimes, people who are licensed to set up sprinkler systems lack
an understanding of backflow installation and certification. At
Radius Services, LLC, we are specialists with certification in
backflow protection from the New England Waterworks Association. |
